History of the Surname
The Normans became Christians and built many abbies and monastaries. They established a feudal society and became renowned throughout Europe for their military prowess. They wore conical helmets with distinctive noseguards, mail shirts, battle axes and the now infamous Kite Shields. They were proficient horsemen and had an extremely effective calvary in France. |
Our first recorded ancestor as of this date is WILLIAM COMIN, who was born in London, England sometime about the year 1580. He sired two sons, Nicholas and Edward.
In 1622 the "Gifte of God", a ship owned by a Mr. Bennet, set sail from London, England bound for the colonies. Aboard was a man by the name of NICHOLAS CUMMINS, the emmigrant ancestor of my line. Nicholas was born in London, England in 1602. When he arrived at Carter's Grove Plantation in Williamsburg, Virginia, he studied to be a Land Surveyor. It is known that 1621-1622 were hard years for the Williamsburg area, and saw many deaths from the cruel winter and Powhatan Massacre of 1622. The name "Nicholas Comin" may be found in the 1624 Census, recording him as a resident of James County. In 1629 Nicholas was named Land Surveyor. Nicholas married a woman by the name of Ellen Elison who was born in Hampton Parish, York Co., Virginia. Together they had three children: Elizabeth, William, and Nicholas.
NICHOLAS CUMMINS Jr. was born somewhere in Virginia about 1636. He married a woman by the name of Elizabeth Hooper and together they had one son that I am aware of: William Cummins (Abt 1656).
WILLIAM CUMMINS was born about 1656 in St. Stephens Par, Northumberland, Virginia. He married a woman there by the name of Ann, and together they had three sons: Robert, Thomas, and Alexander.
ALEXANDER CUMMINS was born about December 10th, 1677 in St. Stephens Par, Northumberland, Virginia. In 1707 he married a woman by the name of Sarah Muttoone from Gloucester County, and together they had three sons: Thomas, Malachi, and Simon.
SIMON CUMMINS was born February 19th, in either 1699 or 1700. He was born in Northumberland and married a woman by the name of Elizabeth Fairweather. Together they had 6 children: Piety, Conney, Elizabeth, Sarah, John, and Alexander. In 1759 Simon Cummins was recorded to have paid "titheables". According to this same record, Alexander Cummins was living with him.
ALEXANDER CUMMINS was born in 1733, most likely in Fauqier County, Virginia. He married a woman from Stafford County by the name of Sebitha Hamilton. Together they had five children: Simon Alexander, George, Laura, Elijah, and William Willis.
SIMON ALEXANDER CUMMINS, was born in Fauquier County, Virginia, on July 27, 1787. He married a woman by the name of Elizabeth Oliver, another resident of Fauquier County. The marriage took place on September 4th, 1808 in Caldwell County, Kentucky. Together they had They had 9 children : Noah Hamilton, Levin Lemuel, William Henry, Louisa Ann, Simon Alexander, Irene Elizabeth, Elijah Washington, Lucinda J. "Liddis", and Sarah Jane "Sally".
NOAH HAMILTON CUMMINS was born on July 9, 1809 in Prince William Virginia. He married a woman by the name of Delilah G. Crow on February 26, 1828. She was born on June 26, 1811. They had 12 children: Moses Henry, George Evans, Charles Boyd, James Edwin, Christopher Columbus, Rufus Eugene, William Hamilton, Lucinda Jane, James Harrison, John Wesely, Sarah Elizabeth, and Zarilda M. In 1850 the census found them to be living in Caldwell County.
MOSES HENRY CUMMINS was born on May 18th, 1836 in Kentucky, probably in either Caldwell or Lyon Counties. He married a Ms. Rebecca Prudent Prince who was born on November 11th, 1841. They had 7 children: Urie Love, Thomas Henry, Enach Hamilton, Charles Harvey, Finas Evans, Alice Elizabeth, and James Mattison.
URIE LOVE CUMMINS was born on July 4th, 1880 somewhere in Kentucky, probably in either Caldwell or Lyon Counties. He married a woman by the name of Martha Rose Ella Hall. They had 7 children: Cecil Clyde, Raymond Francis, Grace Etta, Herman Lloyd, Orbie Leon, Daisy Girline, and Ruby Hazeltine.
CECIL CLYDE CUMMINS was born on December 24th, 1902 in Confederate, Kentucky. He married a woman in March of 1946 by the name of Jesse Evelyn Cobb, who was born in Sloughters, KY. They had one child together and named him Michael Eugene. Cecil had a son in a prior marriage with a Ms. Vallie Love Sills, and named him Orbie Earl. As an aside, Orbie Earl married a woman by the name of Nancy Lee Larson. Together they had two daughters named Kathy Lee and Kelley Sue.
MICHAEL EUGENE CUMMINS was born on April 2nd, 1948 in Madisonville, Kentucky. He married a woman by the name of Joyce Ann Sherman, who was born in Pierre South Dakota on September 2nd, 1947. They were married on June 4th, 1969 in Downer's Grove, Illinois. They had two children together: Michael Eugene and Evelyn Marie.
MICHAEL EUGENE CUMMINS II was born on May 26th, 1970 in Elksgrove Village, IL. Michael married the former Wendy M. Madara in a public ceremony aboard a Motor Yacht from which they and their guests released numerous butterflies. Wendy has a son, Daniel Phillip Tallman from a previous marriage that rounds out their happy family of three.
